Since 2009, the Orleans and Essex County Natural Resources Conservation Districts have been making strides in lakeshore restoration through the Northeast Kingdom Lakeshore Buffering Program (NEKLB). This initiative helps shoreland property owners by providing support for buffer plantings and stormwater management projects, contributing to healthier lake ecosystems.

A major highlight of recent efforts in 2024 is the completion of 12 Lake Wise assessments under the Echo-Seymour Lake Watershed Action Plan, earning 8 new awards for these lakes. Over the past three years, the Orleans County NRCD has spearheaded four Lake Watershed Action Plans (LWAPs), identifying a remarkable 246 restoration opportunities. These projects lay the groundwork for ongoing and future restoration initiatives.

More recent successes include the installation of three shoreland restoration projects on Shadow and Crystal Lakes. These efforts focused on managing stormwater flow, enhancing vegetation, and stabilizing eroding shorelines, using collaborative solutions supported by water quality advocates and property owners.

One of the greatest values of NRCDs in the lake watershed planning space is their success in working with farmers through program navigation services. These collaborations have effectively addressed agricultural runoff and increased conservation practice adoption, playing a critical role in improving water quality throughout the watershed.

Recognizing the importance of collaboration, the District has built a network of over 40 excavators, landscapers, and designers trained in lakeshore best management practices (BMPs). A recent hands-on workshop at Crystal Lake further equipped over 25 contractors with practical restoration skills.

To sustain these efforts, the Orleans County NRCD is hiring a dedicated Lake Watershed Program Specialist to lead project management and foster partnerships with lake associations. As the program grows, the conservation districts remain committed to protecting and enhancing the Northeast Kingdom’s stunning lakes for generations to come.
